Seems like food is a rising trend in Central Florida, and the following list of sites reinforces that with some great links and lots of juicy content to sink your mental teeth into. I present, in no particular order (and by no means comprehensively) a list of sites you should check out if you’re into food:

Winter Park Harvest Festival
This website exists right now to promote an event, happening November 20th in “Central Park’s West Meadow”, whatever that means. Already, the site has loaded up with some great how-to articles for growing your own food and announcing some smaller events leading up to the festival.

A Local Folkus
Started in 2007, this locally-sourced blog is written by John Rife, who is now taking an active role in advancing the Slow Food and Slow Money movements here in Central Florida. He is well-known for taking massive continent-spanning road trips in his camper named Kodi, along with his wife and his dog. Now John talks about heritage, local markets, gardening, and local events, with lots more road-tripping thrown in. Subscribe and enjoy!

The Good Garden
I recently met author Sarah Kinbar through a local gathering called Florida Creatives Happy Hour, and it turns out we shared a former employer. Sarah has years of experience with traditional print magazines, and now she is stamping out daily posts on her site about growing food and fun things you can do with the things you’ve grown – lots of fun recipes and personal stories. Sarah also works with a team of contributors to make sure there is a “fresh” post every day!

Edible Orlando Magazine
Apparently, this website is also available in dead tree form… This brand new magazine produced locally about the great culinary escapades and I believe it is very focused on the Slow Food movement. As of this writing, all their content is locked inside the digital edition in the sidebar, but the full magazine’s content is available there. The site is part of a network called Edible Communities, which also produces a healthy number of podcasts in addition to almost 60 regional magazines.

The Thin Chef
This blog is a weekly entry by “thin” Katie Farmand, who happens to be one of the editors of the Edible Orlando mag above. She makes no promises about being a diet blog: In her own words, “Not low-calorie, or low-fat, but food that is real, whole, and fuels your body.” Still, there are some fun-looking recipes here, and it’s worth checking out.

Like I said, these are certainly not the only 5 sites about food in Orlando, or even about this particular subject. At the same time, I hope you have learned something, and will continue to learn by checking out these sites!

I enjoyed the video, and the production quality… and the song is pretty good, too! Give it a listen. It’s much longer than a normal music video, because the song is baked into the story. I’d like to see this group enter their video in the next Orlando Comedy Video Sketch Fest on October 14th at the Gallery at Avalon Island.

The NFL's most competitive division rounds out the PreSeason predictions for 2010. Will the Dallas as the favorite in the NFC fulfill the destiny of Super Bowl bound as ordained by sports writers everywhere? Will the New York Giant bounce back from last year's struggle? Can the Philadelphia Eagles cope with life without QB Donovan McNabb? And will McNabb be able to drag the Washington Redskins from the depths to be a factor in the league?

The SoTG, Weasel, and Chris all weigh in.

I know the Star Wars Celebration V happened this past weekend here in town, so I decided to try and find some video from the event. I found some crappy video, and lots of “get ready for it” type videos. The best one I’ve seen to date is actually semi-officialy created by the Orange County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, with their Orlando Smiles campaign. Last year, they had a contest and eventually hired a couple to create a video every day for 67 days… not sure why 67 exactly, but there it is… and now there is this damn good video about the official fan convention for Star Wars, held at the Orange County Convention Center, not far from several huge theme parks and tons of attractions and other touristy activities. Must be pretty cool for people who don’t live here.

From August 12 – 15, 2010 more than 25,000 fans from all over the world gathered in Orlando, Florida to celebrate the phenomenon that is Star Wars. Here’s a look at the festivities hosted by one of the world’s most popular vacation destinations.

There’s almost a Vegetarian Indian District in the OBT/Florida Mall area, topped off with an Indian grocery in the same area. I have yet to try them all, but I’ve heard it’s certainly worth checking out. Two bonus reviews for you too, one by I-Drive and Kirkman and the other in East Orlando near UCF.
1. Woodlands Indian Cuisine

I often go for a sampler, about $16, which features small bowls of different sauces, soups and even a dessert, along with a bit of rice, some flat bread and a few appetizers – including a veggie and potato Somosa, yum! The other popular choice for us are called Dosas, which are giant pancakes/crepes with some filling, normally potato, rolled inside. They always bring a pitcher of water to the table, and be ready for some spicy food. You can request different levels of heat for some dishes.

I first heard about Woodlands from some vegetarian/vegan friends of mine. I have been seeking out veggie places lately, because it lets me know I have a city that is tolerant of different lifestyles, and it proves I don’t have to move somewhere else to get access to other cultures. This restaurant is not decorated very lavishly, unless you count the lemon and chili peppers hanging by the front door. Right off of north OBT, easy to get to, and always good service, and a staff who is used to helping us Americans figure out what we should order.

2. Udipi Café

Head here for the lunch buffet. Completely worth your time. They even have a dish on the buffet that resembles “Sloppy Joe”, but it’s made with some meat substitute, and still served on a plain hamburger bun. Every buffet comes with a giant Dosa pancake/crepe filled with potato and vegetable – delicious. The food is all vegetarian. (hint: Udipi is a region of India that is known for vegetarian food) Would definitely come here again, despite the fact that it’s almost up in Longwood, which is not close to my home. Hopefully I’ll have a good excuse to go again soon!

3. Khasiyat Indian Restaurant

The interior (and exterior) is not all that interesting, but they do have a a few things going for them. The service was pretty delightful. We saw a large family who must have been visiting the theme parks, and made the trip all the way out to this neighborhood for a taste of home. I’m also going to assume they might have been vegetarian, which can be a challenge at the local theme parks, unless you like salad. After having been to a few other vegetarian places in town, Khasiyat held few surprises, but they did sport a television with music videos and other Bollywood gems.

Our local Orlando Weekly paper recently published a cover story on “Clucking Around”, highlighting the hijinx of some anonymous downtown dwellers, who choose to remain so because raising chickens is illegal here in the City Beautiful. Go read the feature, it’s both informative and charming.

On a similar note, a recent book read of mine had a chapter on raising chickens, not only for producing eggs, but as pets. There’s a great (sad) story involving some local predators as well, and the construction of an automatic chicken coop door.
The book is called Made by Hand, and it’s authored by the editor of Make Magazine, Mark Fraunfelder. In addition to the dozen or so other chapters about Mark’s journey toward self-reliance and connecting with his surroundings, he talks about tutoring his daughter, moving to the South Pacific and some other great stories that can’t be missed.

How do I submit my video(s)?
Between 24 July and 31 July, just click the “Submit” tab on Life In A Day channel and upload the footage directly from your computer. The “Submit” tab will become visible on 24 July.

Does my video have to be documentary? Can it be fiction?
All we’re asking is for you to document your world over the course of a single day; we expect most videos to comprise documentary footage, but if you think that your world is best captured through fictional storytelling or even animation, it is entirely up to you.

Do I need permission to record other people in my video?
Yes, you do need permission to include other people in your video. If your video makes it through the first stage of our selection process, we will email you release forms which you must send back to us signed by anyone who appears in your video.

Can I use music?
Please avoid the use of music within your submission.

What do I need to know about recording sound?
It’s important to think about the audio on your video, as sound recording often affects the overall quality of a video. Good sound recording will probably increase the chance of your footage being chosen to be in the final film. If possible, it would be great to enhance your recording by using external microphones, in addition to those built in to most cameras.

When is the Sundance Film Festival?
The 2011 Sundance Film Festival will take place from 20 January to 30 January 2011. The premiere date of Life In A Day will be announced closer to the start of the festival.

The Sustainable Economies Law Center (SELC) is working with a team of interns and volunteers to explore the legal needs of a growing urban agriculture movement. We are developing an online Urban Agriculture Legal Resource Library, and designing resources and presentations that explore legal issues that relate to urban agriculture, including: land acquisition, zoning, property taxes, land covenants, health codes, building codes, nuisance laws, land conservation tools, and so on.

The Sustainable Economies Law Center (SELC) facilitates the growth of sustainable, localized, and just economies, through legal research, professional training, resource development, and education about practices such as:

One of my twitter friends, @ultimike, recently linked me to a story from the Orlando Sentinel about a homeowner’s association in East Orlando that won’t let someone get a light-colored roof, which could save them $100 – $150 per month on their electric bill because it won’t match the “harmony” of the rest of the neighborhood.

From Orlando homeowner battles HOA, wants roof to reflect energy-saving ethic:

She said she understands that her neighbors denied the request because no one else has a white roof.

But “until you get one white roof, you can’t have two. Until you have two, you wouldn’t have three,” Piper said. “If we did all the roofs at one time, with $100 of savings a year on each one and 100 homes, that’s $10,000 … for electricity that is just wasted now.”

Jessica’s show at Taste is her first solo show, and the entire show depicts mothers, girls grappling with the state of being a mother, and the fact that they are able to become mothers.

A blurb from the Daily City had this to say:
From Jessica Earley at Taste

Jessica Earley (Audience Choice Awards, Blunder Bungle, Interview) has her first solo show *ever* June 11, 2010 7-9pm at Taste (717 W Smith Street). Free admission. Drink specials. She describes the show as this: “There will be boobies, there will be babies, there will be blood (really).”

Not to mention the purple hair, but WTF?

About the Creative Mind Experiment:

See how differently creative minds interpret the same inspiration.

All of the creators agreed to participate without knowing what their source of inspiration would be. They were given a 3 min and 33 sec piece of music and asked to create “something” in that time frame. They can use any medium they wish and as little or as much of the music as they desire. The only rule is that they must create something that was inspired by something they heard or felt in the piece of music.

See what creators like Bob Kodzis (Creative Catalyst/Improv Actor), Brian Feldman (Performance Artist), Jordan Woods-Robinson (Blue Man/Actor/Fiddle Player), Evan Miga (DRIP Creative Engineer & Graphic Designer), Lindsay Cohen (Writer/Actor), Ryan Price (Community Builder/Hacker), Richard Paul (Improv artist), Brandon Roberts (Producer/Director/Actor, Creator of the PB&J Theatre Factory) , Tisse Mallon (Photographer/Creative Mind), Melissa Cowen (Child Dance Prodigy), Comedians, Musicians, Choreographers and more separately create.

While communities across the nation seek new ways to generate local economic development and job growth without spending millions of dollars, St. Cloud and Osceola County took a big step forward recently with the formal dedication of the new UCF Business Incubator-St. Cloud facility at 3201 Budinger Ave. in St Cloud.

Gordon Hogan, director of operations for the UCF Business Incubation Program, said the launch of the new 14,000 square foot facility marks a new era of economic development activity in Osceola County.

Four incubation client companies are locating offices in the new facility immediately, Hogan said, and the UCF Business Incubation Program expects to name a full time site manager in less than 30 days. Eventually, the UCF Business Incubator-St. Cloud could accommodate as many as 20 client companies.

Business incubators rank among the most cost-effective ways to generate sustainable local economic growth. Since 1999, the UCF Business Incubation Program has helped more than 140 emerging companies generate more than $800 million in annual revenues and more than 1,600 new jobs with an average salary of $59,000.

Research has shown that 87 percent of incubator graduates are still in business five years after graduating from an incubation program, said UCF’s Business Incubation Program Founder Dr. Tom O’Neal.

“The UCF Business Incubator-St. Cloud will provide a wide range of services to accelerate the growth of promising young companies so they can play a greater role in economic expansion in the local area,” Hogan explained.

The UCF Business Incubation Program currently supports nearly 90 client companies, Hogan said, and ranks as one of the premier university-based incubation programs in the U.S.

“St. Cloud is very excited to have one of the premiere incubation programs in the country in St. Cloud. The UCF Business Incubator-St. Cloud will not only assist in growing our own companies, but will help to achieve the long-time goal of diversification in the local job markets and the overall economy,” said Ernie Gearhart, Economic Development Consultant for the City of St. Cloud.

The St. Cloud incubator facility is one of eight in the University of Central Florida’s Business Incubation program. Additional incubator facilities are located at UCF Campus, Research Park in east Orlando, and in Orlando, Sanford, Winter Springs and Leesburg.

Memorial Day weekend is upon us. For every other holiday, there are a variety of ways to celebrate. Sometimes I don’t know my Thanksgiving plans until two weeks before. As a student, I had a part-time job in which I always worked Easter. Sometimes, I’ve even celebrated the Fourth of July without fireworks.

But I’ll be damned if I celebrate Memorial Day in any other way except Fringe. The Orlando Fringe Festival, to be specific – the first in North America and one weekend in which I get to come back to my beloved hometown and celebrate in the kookiest way imaginable.

“Pepe come here,” Blue shouts...
Copied from Rob Ward: Nipple Tape, Furries, and Gas Masks, Oh My - Pepe Makes a Cameo in VarieTEASE, this post about Pepe is the definition of a "Fab Fringe Moment".

Blue then calls the full cast together for a pre-show energy circle, some motivational words, and a prayer of sorts (to the theatre gods?). I like being a part of this. Performing as Pepe is one of my favorite things in the world to do, but oddly enough before a show, it can be a little lonely, so it’s nice to connect with a big cast … and there’s a lot of love in this circle. Good feeling.

Also today in the blogosphere, Katie Ball continues her marching rampage through the 2010 Fringe, with a post entitled, "MORE, MORE, MORE!".

”T-O-T-A-L-L-Y” is an inspiring story of a woman taking back her personal power. No bra burning or picket signs in sight, instead the irrepressible Kimleigh Smith uses sassy dialog, a sultry R&B voice and some sexy-ass dance moves to show her transformation from a teenage valley girl into a hot HOT woman of substance. Anyone, male or female, will be encouraged by T-O-T-A-L-L-Y 's story of facing crippling adversity, owning it, and then kicking it to the curb.

“Goblin Party Interactive” - Oh my God this was so much cooler than I could even imagine. It's the movie Labyrinth done Rocky Horror style, but joined by a range of clever puppets, dreamy kite work and puppeteers Heather Henson and Marsian's hysterical portrayals of the lead characters Sarah and the Goblin King. My suggestion: round up a crowd of friends, take the kites and ears you made at the Ibex tent, medicate however you see fit and then jump into the fray. TOO MUCH FUN.

“Some Other Day” is a beautifully simple story told by two artists who are proud to share the tradition of old Vaudevillian showmanship. Whether altering the space/time continuum, dabbling in the supernatural or bringing applause with just a smile, Schave and Reilly keep doing what they do best – being freaking adorable. “Some Other Day” is 50 minutes of genuine sweetness; it may not be for everyone, but the world would be better if it was.

"Canuck Cabaret"
I love Canadians, and what better way to celebrate than by witnessing the Canuck Cabaret? Hosted by Fringe sweetheart Paul Hutcheson and the saucy Sharon Nowlan, this variety show features new guests with each performance. I was lucky to get to see Schave and Reilly do an amazing juggling routine - so clever that my friends and I are still trying to figure out how they did it. And Paul and Sharon delivered a number of performances that ranged in tone from beautifully and serenely cosmic to the universally well-regarded theme of poo. I loved the show and actually wish I could go every day.

had a wonderful night at Fringe! Can't do big write ups today, y'all - applying for a position with the Orlando Shakes and needing to get my butt back out to the Fringe. Will say that I had three home runs yesterday - "Some Other Time" [sic] was beautifully sweet, "T-O-T-A-L-L-Y" was inspiring and empowering, "Goblin Party" was so much freaking fun!!! Imagine Rocky Horror interaction but with Labyrinth!! Great times yesterday. More soon.

The Ibex tent at Fringe is my new favorite place. Last night I spent well over an hour creating what director Mike Marinaccio dubbed “Bad Bunny Ears”. Good/Bad, not Evil ; ) Made with pipe cleaners, fabric, hot glue, feathers (and with a good bit of guidance from puppeteers Heather Henson and Marsian), I felt my already low blood pressure drop further still.

If you aren't into making ears you can make a kite! It's free, folks, great great fun and free. Go make something awesome and then take it to Ibex's interactive Goblin Party. I want to get a big posse together for that, who's game?

Last night's opening was a quiet one but still so great. Missed the ribbon cutting because it was still so damned hot, so my buddy Emily and I had the contingency plan of drinking at Peacock first : ) Though we were both very well behaved because we knew we had a long night ahead of us and wanted to be in shape for it. The bartender had never heard of Fringe, and while I never like to be one of those clutch the pearls “You've never heard of...?” people, this one continues to surprise me. But it also kind of excites me because there are so many more people the regulars can help bring into the fold. The bartender and dred boy next to me sounded pretty well sold when I talked to them about Schave and Reilly's show, with the dred guy saying 'It's not every day someone talks about Buster Keaton at a bar.'

So “The Bike Trip” is kind of where words fail me. I was such a fan of last year's “Wanderlust” that I almost didn't want Dockery to come back. Odds were he wasn't going to top it and there was the real possibility that we had seen the best he had to give. So I entered the Silver venue with mixed feelings - hopes for the guy, but worried.

Lights up, he's on, and then away we go.

Some basic decision-making tips that have delivered a pretty decent rate of success for me. Doubtless you have your own methods and I'd be interested in hearing your ideas!

(In no particular order)

Past experience – you rocked last year you'll probably rock this year.

Canadian - Unlike South Park I do not blame Canada and usually love every production that heads this way.
