Snapwell: Orlando Film Festival

The Orlando Film Festival has been around for… almost 7 years now. They started with a few screenings at CityArts Factory and DMAC (Avalon Island) with the promise of moving the the new Plaza Cinema, which took years to open, though it was on the books and mostly built out their first year. Now it is growing into a great event showcasing Downtown Orlando, which we could honestly use more of. Not as large or well-established as their spring counterpart hosted by Enzian, but still a fun and enriching event.

I know Marlon and Jeff of Snapwell Films from their involvement in Urban ReThink – they even produced a promotional video to help us out.

Welcome to Titusville – Ride5 Media Group

The end of the NASA Shuttle program’s 30-year mission to boldly go to the International Space Station has caused a lot of hubub on Florida’s East Coast. Take a look at some of the people affected.

Welcome to Titusville from Ride5 on Vimeo.

Welcome to Titusville shows the impact of the 30 year Space Shuttle program on the residents of Titusville, a city that lies only a few miles from Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

Music by Phillip Sheppard

If it were not for NASA, we would not have UCF (originally built as a tech school to train engineers to work in the Space industry), the “Beach Line”, Waterford Lakes, and tons of other amenities in Orlando. People give Disney a lot of credit for bringing economic development to Orlando, but the people employed by military contracts, Lockheed, Siemens, simulation and training, and other engineering industries is really the backbone of Orlando’s higher-paying jobs. This is a huge impact to our entire region, not just the few towns neighboring Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral.

Snap! 2011 Building Projection at Kress

Last night, downtown Orlando was graced with a spectacle of light and sound as the kickoff to the 2nd Annual Snap! Photography Festival. The historic Kress department store building, now home (in part) to the Kres Chophouse was lit up by a show created by a group called Paintscaping.

Snap will be going on for the rest of this week at the Orlando Museum of Art and the GAI building in Thornton Park. Local, National and International photographers are showing their work and giving workshops and other lectures. This is an event that is definitely raising the cultural bar in Orlando.

One Minute People – Local Web Series

At yesterday’s Enzian FilmSLAM I ran into filmmaker Ali Imran Zaidi, who told me he’d been working on a web series here in Orlando called One Minute People. I have embedded Episode 1: Jessie here to get you started:

Imran is hoping to shoot a second season sometime soon. Maybe if you give them a PayPal donation it could speed up the process.

Mumpsy’s Greek Mythologist Series

Local band Mumpsy collaborated with some local artists to create these beautiful videos, each featuring the story of a prominent character from Greek Myths. Here I have them in a playlist, so you can watch them all in a row. The album was released earlier this year.

I first became aware of the project when they had a photography show at local hangout Ethos Vegan Kitchen. I knew there was music associated with it, but I didn’t really absorb it all until just this week. I can’t seem to find a place to buy the record online. Hopefully Jeff will write me back.

You can (must) certainly check out their latest album, Fatelifter. The band had a Kickstarter campaign for Fatelifter earlier in the year, which was very successful. You can probably get the most up-to-date information on Mumpsy at Facebook.

Suddenly Santa (2009)

Santa arrives on Amtrak and as he walks through Winter Park is surrounded by holiday cheer as children and bystanders join him in singing Joy to the World.

This video is part of a viral campaign for a local film and book about the legend of Santa Claus. Check out their site Santa Is Real.

Santa at the Enzian

Santa made a stop at Enzian to visit and pick up the kids’ letters to Santa, and he promises that “they’ll get to the right people.” A lovely time was had by all, kids, parents and Santa.

I love some of the fun themed (non-movie) events that the fine folks at Enzian have been cooking up lately.

Solillaquists of Sound “Marvel” music video by x:144

Marvel from Solillaquists of Sound’s latest release “No More Heroes” (Anti-/Epitaph Records), is the first of a 3-part music video series shot by fellow Orlando MC/producer and first time director, X:144.

This series of videos is set to mirror the groups collection of three conceptually linked albums called The Listeners Trilogy. This first video, much like the first album of the trilogy, As if We Existed, introduces the story’s characters to the audience.

The next video will follow the action-packed dynamic of No More Heroes. The story will unfold over the next couple of months with the release of the next two videos and provide a bridge to the final album of the trilogy.

video edited, directed & cinematography by X:144 (Maged Khalil Ragab) on NO budget.. not one penny!

Part 2:

http://sites.google.com/site/lifeinadayfaqs/

How do I submit my video(s)?
Between 24 July and 31 July, just click the “Submit” tab on Life In A Day channel and upload the footage directly from your computer. The “Submit” tab will become visible on 24 July.

Does my video have to be documentary? Can it be fiction?
All we’re asking is for you to document your world over the course of a single day; we expect most videos to comprise documentary footage, but if you think that your world is best captured through fictional storytelling or even animation, it is entirely up to you.

Do I need permission to record other people in my video?
Yes, you do need permission to include other people in your video. If your video makes it through the first stage of our selection process, we will email you release forms which you must send back to us signed by anyone who appears in your video.

Can I use music?
Please avoid the use of music within your submission.

What do I need to know about recording sound?
It’s important to think about the audio on your video, as sound recording often affects the overall quality of a video. Good sound recording will probably increase the chance of your footage being chosen to be in the final film. If possible, it would be great to enhance your recording by using external microphones, in addition to those built in to most cameras.

When is the Sundance Film Festival?
The 2011 Sundance Film Festival will take place from 20 January to 30 January 2011. The premiere date of Life In A Day will be announced closer to the start of the festival.

Make it Short is merging with Liberatr Presents

Download the Announcement
Length: 1:37

If you are still subscribed to this RSS feed, this is a notification that these posts will all be migrated over to Liberatr Presents (live.liberatr.net) or FloridaCreatives.com shortly. Florida Creatives takes the same creative spirit behind this podcast and incorporates a tangible element: at this time, a group of 50 or so people is meeting each third Monday of the month at the Crooked Bayou in Downtown Orlando. Liberatr Presents will have event announcements pulled in from all over the web, recaps of said events, interviews with cool people and tons of your input.

Please change your subscription, as Make it Short will be dissolving sometime this year. Thank you for your support, comments, suggestions and your listenership, and thanks to the Florida Film Festival crew, as well as JJ, Brian and Michael for doing these initial interviews. Your permalinks will still be good and the downloads for the mp3s will still work for a little while, but make sure you check Florida Creatives or Liberatr Presents if you ever lose them.

I’d especially love for all of our past guests to attend the meetup in May on the 21st or June on the 18th.

Peace,
Ryan Price
