2009 FAB FRINGE FUNDRAISER

I Heart Fringe
The Orlando International Fringe Theatre Festival invites you to show your love for Fringe by attending I Heart Fringe, this year’s Fab Fringe Fundraising event, at 6:00 pm on Monday, February 16th at the Lowndes Shakespheare Center in Loch Haven Park.

The event will feature performances by veteran Fringe favorites, including VarieTEASE, Voci Dance, CineDance Jazz Dance, Pepe, Jeff Jones, and Checkerboard Productions, and will be hosted by the always-hilarious Wayburn Sassy. Catering is generously provided by the Funky Monkey Wine Company. Wine is sponsored by Tastings of Orlando: A Wine Experience, and Beer is sponsored by City Beverages of Orlando.

The event also features a silent and live auction featuring artwork by Lynn Whipple, Brice Stephens, Anna McCambridge, a vintage stole from Orlando Vintage and more, as well as a variety of gifts, spa and getaway packages, services and dining experiences from Orlando’s fun-nest and most Fringe establishments.

Tickets can be purchased by emailing Genevieve@OrlandoFringe.org, or by calling 407-648-0077.

Held May 15th to 26th, 2009, the Orlando International Fringe Theatre Festival is the longest running Fringe in the United States. It is part of the CAFF (Canadian Association of Fringe Festivals) circuit, which allows Fringe artists to tour many different Fringe Festivals throughout North America and which requires all of its festivals to follow the original Fringe philosophy (100% unjuried, 100% uncensored, 100% accessible for artists and audiences alike, 100% of ticket sales given back to the artists). The Title Sponsor for 2009 in Cirque du Soleil La Nouba.
Orlando Fringe brings artists from diverse and disparate mediums together for twelve days for what many consider to be Central Florida’s premiere arts event. For more information, visit www.orlandofringe.org or call 407-648-007.

Technology: Friend, foe or enabler of public perversity?

This morning while waiting for the second train involved in my morning commute, I spied with my little eye a woman reading from a Sony eBook. I was intrigued. Though I technically fall into the category of “Consumer Skeptic,” the reasons are purely monetary. If iPhones and Go!Explore technology were widely available out of gum machines for small change, I would be all over them like rhinestones on a prom dress.

I strategised my train boarding to be nearer so that I could get a better look. I lean over to check out the format of the reading material and to catch a glimpse of how this thing works, when what sentence do I accidentally read?

“Where do you keep your condoms, Lex?” Adam asked.

This tech-savvy, would-be normal person is reading a romance novel. On the train. I can’t think of a less sexy place in the world. A London Underground train ride ranks just below public restrooms and Raffi concerts in my personal “Sexiest Places” list.

Then again, what reason do I have to be judgy-wudgy? Is it the fact that she’s reading a romance novel or because she knew that people would judge her for reading romance novels so she masked her heaving passion with a sleek, electronic, non-phallic device?

TRICKS AND TREATS

Here they are, Adam!

Orlando Critical Mass

I was walking downtown last week and captured this on my phone. Meets last Friday of every month at Loch Haven Park / Science Center, then rides through downtown. I love the pedestrian who was pissed at them for “blocking traffic” and the hipsters who grumbled back at him.

Ask OCPS Board Members to Maintain Arts in Schools at February Town Hall Meetings

From the United Arts of Central Florida group on Facebook:

Now is the time to let members of the Orange County Public School Board know that arts education matters for our children and should be maintained even in difficult financial circumstances. Over the next five weeks, each school board member will hold a town hall meeting in their district to discuss funding challenges in light of next year’s projected shortfall in state revenue.

Please remind them that it’s essential to maintain arts and music specialists in the schools, and let them know that the curriculum-based extended learning experiences our children receive through local arts organizations contribute to academic success.

Whether you’re a parent interested in providing your children with a first-class education, an artist or arts organization working to share the creativity and history of your art form and build future audiences, or a community member who recognizes that arts education helps develop the future innovators and creators in business, medicine, the humanities and other fields that will continue to make Central Florida a vital and thriving region - please act now.

Ask Orange County Public School Board members to continue to support arts education for our students!
