Voci Dance moves to Winter Garden

Heard this from a post on Maupin’s blog, why am I not on the Voci press release list?

Voci Dance, celebrating its 8th season as Central Florida’s premier modern dance company announces their move to Winter Garden, Florida. Beginning in February 2008, the company will make The Centre for Dance & the Performing Arts their new rehearsal space. The studio, owned by dance educator Kathryn Austin is located at West Plant Street in the heart of Winter Garden just 15 minutes west of downtown Orlando.

Located across the street from the studio is the newly renovated Garden Theatre where Voci will perform at the grand opening Garden Theatre Gala celebration February 29. Voci Dance is also the first dance company slated to perform at the theater in November 2008.

For the past year, Voci Dance has rehearsed in downtown Orlando at the historic Avalon Island building managed by Artists Registry. Fortunately for the company, Kathryn Austin’s donation of space came at the same time the company learned their lease would not be renewed at Avalon Island. Voci’s Executive Director, Kelli Cummins explained, “As a small non-profit we depend upon people in our community to help us achieve our mission of making the arts accessible. Kathryn Austin has graciously provided us with the space we need in order to achieve that mission.”

Voci Dance was founded in 2000 and became a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization in 2003. The company receives a small amount of funding from United Arts of Central Florida and is also contracted through United Arts and Orange County Public Schools to provide dance education services targeting Title I schools. To learn more about Voci Dance please visit www.vocidance.org or myspace.com/vocidance. To learn more about The Centre for Dance & the Performing Arts, please visit www.dancecdpa.com.

Downtown Orlando is hemorrhaging art, and lots of arts groups are not able to settle in downtown because the city is too busy trying to be like every other city, but they’re not trying to be themselves. Also, I have never had great feelings about Jeff over at the Rogers Building/DMAC - funny thing - as soon as we brought an expensive video camera into his gallery, he was much more eager to speak with us than on any previous meetings. That’s not how we roll at Blogging Fringe or any Liberatr channels. You should pay us some mind (if any) when we bring a point-and-shoot and tell you hundreds of people will see this in the morning as when we borrow the camera from my brother’s company. Please!

Thanks, Creatives!

What a great event. Networking wins, and on a holiday.

Welcome to Johannes, Ian, Tom, Mike and any other new people I may have missed. If you are new, please subscribe to the mailing list so we can update you about next month’s meeting on the 18th.

I hear the CFLBars folks were there - I’m sorry I missed you.

If you read this before Tuesday the 22nd, be sure to go check out an evening with monochrom, 8PM at Redlight Redlight in Winter Park. DJ is dr.xnlb (aka Eric Marden). Johannes will be covering a “potpourri” of his past art projects in Austira and all over the world.

We also had some nice talks about BarCamp coming up in April. Put it on your to-do list: get on the mailing list, help us find sponsors, and/or just put your name on the list, there are lots of ways to help.

P.S. Gavin Baker (pictured) would like to announce Copynight Orlando, happening tomorrow night, 7pm, Tuesday the 22nd at Stardust. “CopyNight is a monthly social gathering of people interested in restoring balance in copyright law. We meet over drinks once a month in many cities to discuss new developments and build social ties between artists, engineers, filmmakers, academics, lawyers, and many others.”

Gavin founded CopyNight in Gainesville, so he’s got some experience. If you want to know about future events, subscribe to the mailing list.

2007 Orlando Fringe Festival Pie Fight

On Monday night at the Orlando Fringe, the cast of Six Characters: Best Show Ever from NY, NY had an event where patrons got to throw pies in the face of a character. Later, Rye from Influx Dance (Boston, MA) gave our producer Ryan a rainbow tattoo sporting the phrase "Become a Rockstar".

More videos coming out every week on Miro and iTunes. If you’d like to get involved by suggesting an event or venue for us to highlight, get in touch with us at OrlandoScene.TV - thanks for watching.

Likemind in the Morning, Florida Creatives Monday

RSVP & Event Info

Monday, January 21, 2008
6:00pm - 9:00pm
Crooked Bayou
50 E Central Blvd #D
Orlando, FL

Yes, it’s the first month of the new year, but the holiday hangovers are a long-gone memory. It’s just the right time to head downtown for a drink!

Come meet some new people, catch up with old friends and get a clue about what’s going on in the coming year.

IF YOU HAVE NEVER BEEN TO FLORIDA CREATIVES NOW IS THE PERFECT TIME. It’s the start of a new year, and one of your resolutions should be to “Get out more”, “Meet new people in my field”, “Follow up with the people I swapped business cards with a few months ago”. If you feel you’re doing fine in all these areas, INVITE SOME FRIENDS.

Don’t experience Florida Creatives through a second-hand account - like a boyfriend or an intern - the event exists for you to attend, you are meant to participate, and the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. All of us are doing amazing things, and we all hold great potential, and mixing things up, rearranging the pieces, and otherwise adding catalysts to a beaker full of volatile chemicals can only be seen as a good thing. The problem is, our community contains so many different ingredients, and we have barely begun to scratch the surface. Make 2008 the year you got off your duff and became part of the solution.

The FLCreatives Wiki is starting to take shape, but you can help! Create an account or edit anonymously. Add something about one of your friends, and ask them to add something about you! If you think we’re missing a category or a metro area, go ahead and add a new page.

Florida Creatives is a networking group currently serving Central Florida and looking to expand to schools and other metro areas. Membership is comprised of people who pursue creative activities for work or pleasure. Each month we get together to discuss what we do, share stories, make connections, catch up with friends and have a drink.

From the mind of Beth Marshall

In Beth’s latest MySpace blog, she leaves a review for the play currently at the Parliament House’s Lightfoot Theater The Little Dog Laughed (directed by David Lee).

Beth praises the Parliament House, saying “No other bar in town has been anywhere near as successful in doing so to showcase theatre.”

She also gives us a great run-down of what to expect from the community in the next month.

Week 2 of playoff action is in the rear view and CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP SUNDAY approaches. But burning questions were answered last Sunday . . . Did Coach Norv Turner advance the San Diego Chargers farther than Marty Schottenheimer did last year? Which Manning will go farther in the playoffs — Peyton or Eli? Did the Jacksonville Jaguars really stand a chance against the Evil Empire of the New England Patriots? The SoTG and Weasel answer these and many more inquiries while posing questions for the follow week’s consideration.

The Little BarCamp That Could

From the BarCamp Orlando web site.

Thanks to Gregg and Jason and everyone else who helped put this video and this conference together. If I’ve worked the emails properly, I’ll be organizing and promoting the famed “media day”, and hosting another photowalk through College Park (or wherever BarCamp April happens).

P.S. Mark Krupinski has an opening for .NET Developers - if you or someone you know is looking for work, check it out.

OSTV on Infusion Tea

Infusion Tea (1600 Edgewater Dr) is a cafe and restaurant in the College Park section of Orlando. Ryan buys some tea - Cinnamon Ginger Spice, and he also checks out some of the products available at the Cottage Industry Cooperative store inside the store, where 19 local artists sell their products. There are gifts, stationery, baby clothes, pet toys, jewelery, ceramics, clothing, and wedding invitations from Amy Morelli’s 2ucollection.

More videos coming out every week on Miro and iTunes. If you’d like to get involved by suggesting an event or venue for us to highlight, get in touch with us at OrlandoScene.TV - thanks for watching.

January Creative Events

First of all, let me plug the Florida Creatives Happy Hour. Our next event is Monday, Jan. 21st from 6-9PM at the Crooked Bayou. This event has become such a strong driving force in our community, and it’s time to expand. I invite all of you to invite one friend from a non-technical creative field - visual art, poetry, acting, a film, dance, journalism, architecture, etc. If you are one of these people, invite one of your friends. If your friends aren’t interested, we should figure out what we can do as a group to make them interested. For a number of weeks I was trying to recruit people to help me with a poster campaign. I also remember a few people asking me if they could help us design a better Florida Creatives web site. I haven’t forgotten you.

Second I have to mention the BarCamp planning party Saturday, Jan. 12th. Gregg Pollack and his wife are opening up their home to us again to discuss possibilities for a second BarCamp this spring. Check out BarCampOrlando.com for details.

I am very excited about this next event. Johannes Grenzfurthner, better known as a member of the Austiran art collective monochrom are visiting Orlando and they’re hosting an event at Redlight Redlight on Tuesday, Jan. 22nd. According to Ian Monroe (Orlando Weekly), if you’ve never heard of monochrom, “then you haven’t
been paying attention.” He’s quite right. He copied several links to their far-reaching and thought-provoking work in a recent email that was copied to the Florida Creatives mailing list (you are a subscriber, right?) I invite you to check them out and DO NOT MISS this event.

We also have our likemind.orl coffee hour on Friday, Jan. 18th at B & S Daily Market from 8-11AM. Coffee is sponsored, and Manny also has treats, magazines, hot dogs and pressed sandwiches. This event is centered a bit more around coworking instead of socializing, but plenty of that happens as well.

A similar type event happens in Winter Park every Tuesday: Cup-O-Code. This event was started by Mike G of CFPHP (but he’s left us for greener pastures in NYC), and happens every Tuesday from 7-9PM or as long as Steve lets us use their private conference room.

Also very cool and happening this month are two events that relate to the creative process: one in advertising and the other in theatre.

AD2 Orlando (Young Professionals in Advertising) is hosting and event January 9th at the Orlando Sentinel called From Concept to Completion. Featuring local agencies Fry Hammond Bar and Knight, they will “re-live the experience of creating the project from start to finish, including how various elements of the campaign were developed and produced.” The whole thing gets kicked off at 6PM. RSVP required.

The Mad Cow Theatre is hosting an Inspiration Salon with the creative team behind their upcoming production, Life is a Dream, a classic play from Spain. Join Artistic Director Alan Bruun, the cast of Life is a Dream, and special guests Rob and Tara Anderson, who have produced shows like Urinetown, Sweeney Todd, and She Loves Me. Tickets are $5.

If I’m forgetting something huge, please let me know. If you have something you want plugged to the creative community, we’re listening.

P.S. I also just found an event via the AIGA Orlando site (graphic design) called Re:Solutions ‘Day Conference’. It’s $80 if you’re not a member of the group, but it features “Publix’ Tim Cox—mastermind behind the store’s brand redesign and the award-winning designers from Mucca Design/NYC.”

Re:Solutions takes place this Saturday on the Fullsail Campus. Also featured: “Thomas Scott of Eye Noise will go beyond the dropdown font menu, demonstrating techniques to create vintage hand lettering styles using Adobe Illustrator. Cassi Willard of Full Sail will present an Intellectual Property Seminar and rockstar photographer Brook Pifer will also be on hand with a tantalizing display of her most recent work.”

P.P.S. Please check out Mark Baratelli’s awesome Orlando Arts Blog for events like this. Really.

Coworking: Creative TreeHouse Pittsburgh

Creative TreeHouse is creative coworking studio that offers shared creative space, a meeting/event spot, and creative services to the Pittsburgh, PA area. This video is from an event they held some time ago where artists stayed up for 24 hours in the space and created original works from scratch around the theme of “Treehouse”.

One of the goals of Florida Creatives is to open a similar space in Orlando. We can’t do it without your help.

Tune your dial to WPRK 91.5 or listen online at wprkdj.org every Wednesday at noon.

Heard it on a Blog: January 2008

Local blog shenomenon Sarah in Tampa is now creating content for ReadWriteWeb and Microsoft’s Channel 10. Heard it on a blog from Tampa called Sticks of Fire, perhaps the best placeblog in Florida.

Local pop act Mumpsy has won the Garage Pop category of the Great Sufjan Song Xmas Xchange (click to stream the song from the contest page). with “Left Alone on Christmas Day”. Heard it on Mumpsy’s MySpace.

Another musician, Chris Zabriskie, released his latest album this week. Included is a song entitled “Joss Whedon” about the creator of Firefly and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He was picked up on some Whedon fan sites and Joss himself left a comment on the song. You can download it the whole album, “O Great Queen Electric, What Do You Have Waiting for Me?” via MP3 on Amazon for $8. Heard it on Chris’ blog.

Orlando has culture! We’ve had it all year and we’ll have lots more in the coming year. Seth Kubersky, the Orlando Weekly’s culture guy, recaps The Culture Beautiful for us through the eyes of five of Orlando’s Arts Big-Wigs: Frankie Messina, Anna McCambridge, Wavy Davy Jordan, Rick Jones and Megan Bardoe. Heard it on Voci Dance comapny’s blog.

Photos from New Media / Podcamp Event

Thanks to Jim Hathaway and Bill Couch for uploading these photos to our Florida Creatives Flickr Pool. I tagged a few of the pics with names in case you forgot, but I think you have to look at them on the actual Flickr page, so please do so.

Thanks to Redlight Redlight for hosting this event - even more thanks to everyone who showed up and especially those who invited a friend, even if you weren’t able to make it down there yourself. Without you folks bringing in the fresh warm bodies, these events couldn’t happen.

Also thanks to Jim for having his camera out at so many of our events. If we ever have a group historian, I’d like to nominate Jim.

P.S. as this is a slideshow of the entire photo pool, the first photos on the list will not always be from the New Media Think and Drink on January 5th, 2008 - but going to the group page and sifting through the archives will help.
