Orlando Puppet Festival Trailer

Check out this video: The 2007 Orlando Puppet Festival!

Add to My Profile | More Videos

You can check out my full post about Orlando Puppet Festival over at BloggingFringe.com, but here’s the short version:

This weekend, a parade of puppeteers will precipitate through downtown in an un-pompous display of consonance…. or they’ll just knock your socks off with some kickass puppeteering. This isn’t the stuff your nieces and nephews are watching on Nickelodeon, we’re talking real theatre with one of the oldest art forms in the world as the showcase.

If you’d like to see your Orlando Video here, email < liberatr AT gmail DOT com >.

Orlando Puppet Festival Schedule

This weekend, for the third year in a row now, I will say to my fellow Fringe Fanatics “You MUST check out the Orlando Puppet Festival“. This event is not for kids (there are some family-friendly shows), but intends to expose Orlando to high-art, cutting-edge expressive puppetry. I’ve seen dozens of different types of acts, some including human actors, others with minimalist puppets, and even puppets singing cabaret.

Headlining this year’s festival are Pennsylvania’s Cashore Marionettes with “Life in Motion” and “Simple Gifts”, and Vermont’s Sandglass Theatre with “Autumn Portraits” and “Isidor’s Cheek”. If you didn’t know this, New England has a thriving puppetry community, including a school in Connecticut with great puppetry programs. We have some of our own here in the South, most notably Atlanta, which is home to the Center for Puppetry Arts.

Another highlight of the festival is Friday night’s “late night” show, “Puppets from the Edge”, NOT to be missed. This is a bit of an open-mic night for puppets, with everyone from local artists to far-off visitors showing off shorter and more experimental pieces. I have some great video of last year’s event if I can ever get some time to edit it down.

Orlando Puppet FestivalA similar type of show is the screening of “Handmade Puppet Dreams” a shorts program of puppet films collected by Heather Henson, which has toured all over the world, from India to California and everywhere in between. Don’t miss the current show at the Gallery of Avalon Island (DMAC), which features puppets from the HMPD films.

Just two more events to plug: check out a live outdoor performance of Heather’s original piece, “Panther and Crane”, inspired by her life in Florida, 8PM Sunday at Hertiage Park in front of the History Center. This play also features our sweethearts Voci Dance. Finally, there will be an OPF wrap party at the Harp and Celt, the downtown bar and restaurant just two doors down from the Mad Cow.

Props to Jamie Donmoyer and Heather for making this great festival even better this year. Multiple venues, family-friendly events (check out the Cupcake Shows), outdoors, films, parties, and of course, some of the most amazing puppetry you will ever see in this town. Order your tickets in advance and get more information by visiting OrlandoPuppetFestival.com, and I hope to see you all there!

October 26, 27, 28 @ Mad Cow Theatre and 3 other venues closeby.

Draft of a Florida Creatives Manifesto

Maybe - it is 5AM as of this posting. I couldn’t sleep, and something resembling this has been stirring around in my head since… September 7th at least. That’s the day I bought the “Building a Burning House” domain (that doesn’t have anything on it now) and started to get more serious about seeing what we could do with Florida Creatives, just in time for September’s hullabaloo. Without any further ceremony, here you go:

We all participate in the creative process, and
We thrive on collaboration and inspiration, therefore
Our nature is such that we seek out our fellows.
People in groups can achieve what one can only aspire to.

Creativity has tangible artifacts,
Stories, Memories and Sparks living in our brains, so
We are constantly seeking sparks and something to catch the spark;
People can be a medium for spreading inspired flames.

Creatives are not chained to “tried and true methods”,
We do what we can with the resources within reach;
We defy convention and build something from not enough, and
Innovation is our byproduct, not our pride.

Florida Creatives
Creating a Community of Innovation

There are some words in there I’m not a fan of. But you see, this is a great place for a Wiki Page (I think).

If you have an idea for something like this - a poem, a story, a mission statement - it might get printed on a poster and handed out at our 1-year anniversary.

More Blog Orlando Publicity

I just noticed on a PeachPit Press blog that Blog Orlando was mentioned. Normally I don’t read their blogs, but I happened to come
across a link in their newsletter that I get since they sponsor my user group. Among the big names mentioned in the post is one of our own crew, Alex Rudloff. Here’s a quote:

I’ve only lived in Orlando for about nine months, and if you ask me how I feel about it, I’ll stutter and stammer for a few minutes before coming up with an answer. But Alex loves Orlando. LOVES it. And his passion and excitement about building a network of Orlando techno-philes and encouraging innovation and growth in the Web development industry in Orlando was completely infectious.

It appears to me that I’m not the only one who thought Alex’s session on the Orlando Scene was awesome.

FLCreatives October Newsletter

Here’s your last-minute reminder that the next Florida Creatives Happy Hour is TODAY, Monday, October 15th from 6 to 9 PM at the Crooked Bayou on Central downtown. Parking at all meters downtown is free after 6, and Crooked Bayou always has 2 for 1 drafts and wells until 7PM. If anyone wants to get there earlier than 6, I know a few people have expressed interest in showing up a little earlier to have time to eat. This month should be a great time if September’s events (BlogOrlando, BarCamp) have done anything for filling people with the creative spirit.

THIS FRIDAY will be the next installment of Likemind.us coffee meetups at B&S Daily Market at 47 E Robinson from 8 - 11AM. Coffee and snacks are provided while supplies last.

Also, more of our creatives have been moving to downtown recently, namely Jason Hawkins, Meagan Fisher, Bill Couch and myself, though we don’t all live together. I think this makes a “coworking-lite” experience like New York’s “Jelly” and Philly’s “Cream Cheese” much easier to facilitate. I’ve got a decent amount of space and parking for small groups, but there may be other people willing to donate their living rooms in the interest of having a quiet coworking-at-home experience. I’d like to talk to the office nomads in our group about a day of the week they prefer for having our version of jelly.

Florida Creatives will be having our one year anniversary in December, and I’m pretty sure we’re going to make a special event of it by scheduling our monthly happy hour at Orlando Brewing and trying to schedule something special to get as many old participants as possible as well as new faces. If this means gathering sponsorships to buy everyone a drink or two and some food (Orlando brewing has a BYO-Food set-up), let’s talk about who we can tap in the next two months.

I have a plan I’d like to get in motion that involves printing up several Florida Creatives posters featuring artwork and photography created by and featuring local creative talent as a way to promote our next year of events. We know where and when all the events will be happening, so it makes sense to give some of us a chance to brighten up the windows and bulletin boards of some of our favorite places in town with some local art as well as give people a visual reminder of who we are, what we’re about, and when we come together. Anyone wishing to submit some design work, photos, or something else they’ve created should hop on the Wiki and click on the page for “poster campaign” so you can add yourself to the list. http://wiki.floridacreatives.com/index.php/FLCreatives_poster_campaign

So much more to talk about, but that’s plenty for now. See you tonight at Crooked Bayou!

Join us at E.L.L.A Music Festival

EllaMusicFest.com

This weekend Becky and Ryan will be attending and videotaping the 2007 E.L.L.A Music Festival at the Rogers Building (the old DMAC at Pine and Magnolia). The event starts at 7PM Friday and Saturday, October 5th & 6th.

These are the sort of events we really love. Local artists representing a niche, but with a message strong enough to reach a wide audience. Instead of waiting a few years for this event to gain popular acclaim, you can be part of the very first adventure by our friends at Gamble Records.

There will be some amazing female-fronted bands at this festival:

Friday October 5th The Actomatics, Geri X, Victoria Lynn Shultz, Channing Deren, Jenny K. Surrounded by Wolves Saturday October 6th Raffa and Rainer, Sunny, Jen Pumo, Rachel Goodrich, Holly Riggs

Tickets are $10/day or $18/two day in advance and $12.50/day or $20/two day at the door. A Portion of Proceeds will benefit: Florida School of Herbal Studies; Simple Living Institute; The Solilla School 4 Creative Kids. Tickets are available now at Dandelion CommuniTEA, Austin's Coffee and Park Ave. CD's.

FL Creatives 10: BlogOrlando Reflection with Becky and Darren

The 2nd Annual BlogOrlando unconference was a smashing success, and lots of Florida Creatives members participated or acted as discussion leaders. Ryan Price gets impressions from Becky Lane and Darren McDaniel about what they took away from the conference.

Florida Creatives would like to send huge thanks to Josh Hallet and all the event organizers and contributors for putting on BlogOrlando.

Becky works with educational theatre for elementary age kids, and Darren works on a social networking site, so the crossover between their jobs actually turned out some interesting points during the discussion. One example: there are kids' social networks and moms' social networks, but none really for moms (or dads) of kids who are using social networks.
