Monthly Archive for April, 2007
Once again, another successful Happy Hour. However, there was disappointment from our regulars. This months turn out was much less than we have had in a while. My guess, by the interview with John Davis (thanks for coming), is that people were at home watching Dancing With The Stars. Thanks to Alex, Ryan, and myself (Charlie) for making it out religiously. Keep watching for updates on Florida Creatives. We are working on incentives to get you creatives to the Happy Hour get togethers, like free beer. If you have never been to a Happy Hour with Florida Creatives, you are really missing some great networking opportunities. I have met some of the most interesting people, and have learned things that I had no idea existed in Orlando. There are great conversations to be had there. But most of all, the Florida Creatives Happy Hour restores the faith of creative people in Orlando that there is intellect, innovation, and culture that can be found in Orlando if we all just expose it a little. Keep on being creative you creatives. Hope to see all of you at the next Happy Hour.

Yesterday I went to Stardust Video & Coffee for the Grandma Party Craft Bazaar / Outdoor Concert / Charity Fundraiser. I had a blast! My table involved making original buttons out of whatever materials you brought - most people used the provided paper and markers, but I also had people bring photos, magazine clippings and compositing several pieces together.
The purpose of the table was to promote my networking group, the Florida Creatives Happy Hour. Lots of people were interested, including someone readers of this blog should be familiar with… Genevieve Bernard.
Genevieve is the Artistic Director for Voci Dance, as well as the Associate Producer for the Orlando Fringe. While I managed to grab lots of photos at the booth yesterday, I didn’t actually get one with Genevieve, but here’s one I found on the Fringe Blog.

As artistic director for a dance troupe, Genevieve had her “Dance Cards” in her bag, and when she pulled them out was when I recognized who she was. I told her how much I liked this campaign becuase it was “Very Voci”. The reason why is because Genevieve made them. Here are some samples from the photoshoot for “Waiting”.

I’m sure you’ll be hearing more about Genevieve and Voci as the festival draws closer. I had a great time talking to her, and she’s going to be a great candidate for a future interview.
Grandma Party was yesterday, and for those of you who missed it, you should be ashamed. Jason Hawkins and Meagan Fisher over at SOLMI put together a cool video about Grandma Party. Not only does Jason have a great camera, but he clearly knows how to use it. If you go to the SOLMI website or iTunes you can get a hi-res version of the video.
We’ve mentioned this group before for their online serial the LOFTS. In addition to their fictional work and short films, they have also started doing event videos like this one. I look forward to every video they release, especially when I get to make a guest appearance.
You can also be friends with SOLMI and the whole gang at MySpace.
IF you want to see your videos or your friends’ videos here on the blog, send a link to an embeddable video in an email to < liberatr AT gmail DOT com >.
I have not been this tired nor this glad to be clean in a while; I really put my sweat into Florida Creatives today. I made a bunch of buttons with our new Florida Creatives logo on them and handed them out while I told people about the group. The main attraction, though, was how you could make your own buttons. People got very creative, from hand drawn art to magazine clippings, stolen Slurpee stickers and photobooth pics. My invention of the day was a button made of looseleaf paper for writing dry-erase messages.
I made a photoset on Flickr of the pictures I took - lots of cool ones from people who made buttons. If you use Flickr, you can tag your photos as upcoming:event=150419 as one way to share them with people.
As far as people from the Happy Hour showing up to the Bazaar, Jason and Megan from SOLMI were there. I also talked to bunches of people who are excited about the event on Monday and the group in general. I’d say mission accomplished.
One last cool thing was a friend I made: Omar, an intern at the Orlando Weekly. He says Likemind.orl is getting printed in this week’s issue (should come out Weds. or Thurs.), and he wants to write about Florida Creatives next time we have an event. Hooray press coverage!
This just came across my email. Any event put on by Orlando SIGGRAPH is amazing. Always great learning experiences, fantastic for networking and running into people you wouldn’t otherwise see normally. Make sure you show up for the mingle and refreshments before the presentation - that is the best part.

I can’t believe a year has passed since my first Grandma Party. This weekend the third somewhat-annual Craft Bazaar (Bizarre) will take place at the coolest coffee house and video rental in Orlando, and by far one of the top 10 independently owned and operated places in Florida.
Casey and the gang are putting together an excellent show for everyone lasting from 10AM to Sunset, and I will be manning the table for as long as I can stand it. I will be selling Florida Creatives buttons, spreading the word about the group and my podcasts (if you come sit at the table you can pimp your projects). Hopefully we will attract the attention of some of the indie kids for Monday’s Happy Hour.
There will be live music, handmade goods for sale, inexpensive designer haircuts, soy dogs, a charity rummage sale and raffle, crafters and artists, gardeners, activists, and so much to see. Imagine the most pretentious Flea Market ever, and then take away the attitude. At the end of the day they will be giving a grant to an artist who applies at the Bazaar, so come by and fill out an application.

The goal for this moth is to come up with some ideas for taking our community’s message and reaching out to other groups in the state, like preparing for our booth at the Orlando Fringe Festival.
Coordinator Ryan Price is also putting together a podcast with members of Florida Creatives; check the website for more info. Bring a stack of business cards and your listening ears.
The eventual goal of this group is to hold a state-wide annual unConference where the community gets together to learn from each other, though the Happy Hour is not a recruitment event for people to work on the conference. This event exists simply for us to get together and be social.
Hey everyone! Ryan here with some FABULOUS updates! First of all, if you’re reading this post via RSS feed, MySpace or email, please immediately stop what you’re doing and head over to the BloggingFringe.com home page. You’ll notice the site looks a fair bit different now, with a search box and some other fun stuff.
First off, take a gander at the search box. We feel that part of the benefit of an online publication like Blogging Fringe is the ability to instantly jump to exactly the content you’re looking for, and the easiest way to find that special something is through a search. Blogging Fringe has been around for an entire year now, so we’ve got a fair amount of articles, podcasts, videos, interviews, reviews and updates to check out. Search results always appear sorted by date so you can find the most recent stuff first.
Next, we have a list of the 10 most recent posts to the ‘Blog’ section of our site. Also not that what was once the home page has now moved to BloggingFringe.com/blog - the blog is still a very important part of blogging fringe, but we are trying to expand our offerings, and it made sense to move the blog off the homepage.
Also featured on the home page is our Twitter update widget. Right now we only have a few friends on Twitter, but you can very easily have your updates posted directly to the homepage of Blogging Fringe by going to Twitter.com and creating an account. Once you’ve done that, add bloggingfringe to your friends list, and we will add you back.
Soon, you’ll be able to get everyone’s Fringe-related updates through Twitter, but for now, it just works the normal way. You get 140 characters (about the length of a text message) to say anything you like. For example, “Just got out of the Yellow Venue, what a great performance!” is only 59 characters, so you can actually fit a fair amount in one post. If you choose to, you can also recieve Twitter updates over the phone, but don’t forget that text messages can cost big money if you don’t have a plan.
We are working hard on updating our information about the multitude of Fringe shows for 2007, and we are always looking for support in the way of money/Fringe Bucks/comp tickets, bloggers, photo sharers, opinion-givers, video-makers, and whatever else you can think of. We are no different from other Fringe patrons, we just want to share our stories with you.
