Holly Riggs’ Farewell Show

Holly Riggs' Final FarewellHolly Riggs' Final Farewell Hosted on Zooomr

Holly Riggs began writing poetry after a rough break up. A producer from Nonsense Records discovered her talents at a performance and offered to produce a spoken word album. It came out great, and Holly kept performing around town. She was a regular at the Tuesday night SPEAKEASY at Will's while it was still around, and she even appeared in the documentary about the event.

Apart from her music career, Holly makes jewelry and produces interactive, hip-hop inspired theatre as Starbananas Productions. I never got a chance to see the play they put on last year, but if I know anything about this girl, it was a sight to be seen.

Come out to Dandelion on Friday and help Orlando wish Holly a fond farewell and many happy returns.

The Florida Creatives blog is read by dozens of people on a daily basis, and if we had some more content going up, I’m sure we could raise that number to hundreds pretty easily - there are tons of great things going on that I can’t cover with the attention that I put into this group. We have some people who are experienced bloggers, and others who aren’t - they are all welcome here.

We’ll have a talk about keeping it on topic and what sorts of things you should be looking for, but for the most part I want you to use your voice and your opinions to make this blog a community produced hunk of the internet that acts as a resource for Creatives in Florida to rally around each other.

If you’re interested, send an email to liberatr [at] gmail DOT com, or use the contact form at the top of the page. If you don’t like either of those options, plan on talking to me at the next Happy Hour on the 19th at Crooked Bayou.

Florida Creatives Mentoring and Collaboration

This week I have been working with a guy named Greg Pederson, and it makes me force my hand on an idea I was planning on releasing to the Florida Creatives community once we get some more rich web tools in place: The Florida Creatives Mentoring and Apprenticeship program.

Sure, I could use the word “intern”, but that doesn’t always apply. In the case of myself and Greg, he is already working in the field and doesn’t need a wiser, older person to show him the ropes, he just wants a stronger grasp of CSS and HTML layout without tables. He has a paying gig that he can hire me out on, but part of his conditions for hiring me were to teach him as we went along. I would call this mentoring. Today he invited two friends (Joshua and Marshall) over to listen in on the lesson. Now we have a situation where three people are benefiting from the knowledge and experience of someone who has more experience, and in creative fields, a few years or even several months can bring essential real-world knowledge.

For example, at the Tampa Blogger Dinner last week, with my 1 year of podcasting experience, I was the “expert”. Some of the guys there sent over Lisa from Tampa Film Fan to talk to me about how to record Skype calls.

I quickly spoke to Gregg Pollack about this and he brought up the idea of Extreme Programming, where one of the overdriving ideals is to have a driver and a back seat driver, so the end product is even better than if you had just a single brain doing the thinking.

On the same vein, I really want to get some fun stuff going here at Florida Creatives around mentorship (or even arena-driven extreme programming), library materials (like educational books/videos/etc you borrow) and media sharing (like what are you working on/ have you worked on in the past). I want creatives in Florida to create a profile for themselves that doesn’t center around just their resume, or their blog, or websites that are relevant to them, and I want the community to help create the tools to publish this information. SO… when we create this software, I’d like for people, like those who want to learn about the software-writing process or non-programmers, to be able to watch while this development is happening. To learn from others’ experience and collaborate.

There is lots more, but for now I’d like to grow the audience and the participation for Florida Creatives, and get the development on some of these tools going. See you all on March 19th!
