Happy Hour this Monday and Likemind.orl Friday

For the uninformed, Florida Creatives Happy Hour takes place each Third Monday of the month (March 19th), and for now happens at the Crooked Bayou on Central Ave in Downtown Orlando. We make it easy to attend after work, from 6PM - 9PM — people generally stay all the way to the end, so don’t feel bad about showing up late. There is no admission fee or really any rules of engagement, but I recommend you bring business cards and open ears.

I have been pimping our little Happy Hour quite a bit this month, I hope you all are following suit. If you want to see the people who took the extra time to register for Upcoming.org, you can see the list of them at the RSVP page for this month’s event. The RSVPs on that page represent about 15% of all the people that attend, which I don’t think is a bad statistic.

Part 2 of this message refers to Likemind.us, which is a coffee meetup in New York started by two guys - Piers and Noah - who wanted to meet people of a like mind. I believe Likemind is in 18 cities around the world now, including Orlando. They even have nametags, buttons and sponsored coffee. If you show up early enough, you might get a free cuppa courtesy of Anomaly.

Orlando’s Likemind takes place next on Friday the 16th of March, which is fast approaching. The idea is to get together before work, so meeting time is 8AM. Some of us stay for a few hours, while others have to get off to work. Our venue for Likemind is the Panera Bread at Lake Eola at the corner of Summerlin and Eola Dr. This is a great location with Wi-Fi, decent coffee and a fun outdoor seating section unique to that location. Street parking is a challenge unless you do so on the north side of Summerlin - that’s where I recommend you park. We are normally sitting directly in front of the door.

Even when it’s not the third Friday of the month, you can often find creatives congregating at Lake Eola on Friday mornings - that’s when I teach my CSS lessons and record podcasts with various people, and when a lot of people get meetings and work out of the way. I like to call it “Coworking Friday” - it is the closest thing we have to that sort of community workspace for now.

I know there are other things going on all the time - I will be missing Artsy Happy Hour Wednesday in Winter Park, as well as Ruby User’s Group Thursday, but I know there are other events happening all the time and all over the state, but the only way I can find them all is with your help. Use the contact form at the top of the page to send in your submissions. Thanks.

What is Fringe?

A script writer with some shows in the Minnesota Fringe recently got asked some questions by a local student and is posting his responses on a website. There is no RSS Feed, no way for me to subscribe or add him to the Blogtracker, so I don’t consider it a blog, despite its overt “blogginess”. I can say the same for the official Minnesota Fringe site, as well as our own OrlandoFringe.org - they should at least link to a myspace blog feed or something. I know most of the audience won’t care about subscribing, but we can make them care if we work together.

Here is Matthew A Everett’s response to “Why would someone choose a Fringe performance as opposed to traditional theater?”

(it was, as you might imagine with me, a multi-part answer…)

The first reason why…

It’s faster

One of the many things that’s great about the Minnesota Fringe Festival is, you’re not investing an entire day or evening of your time on any one production.

Love it or hate it, nearly all the shows are over in under an hour.

So if you like it, it feels like time flew by, and if you don’t connect with it, well, it’ll be over soon and you can try something else.

Even the longest shows in the Fringe are only 75 minutes (an hour and fifteen) long, so it’s theater in a more compact package.

Easily digestible, leaving you room for more if you want.

You can read more by visiting this page of Matthew’s site - he says he will be posting a new answer every day - I think the list of questions at the top are the ones remaining to be answered.

My advice to Matthew and anyone else looking to do serious online promotions - get a Wordpress.com account or a MySpace and blog there - provide an email subscription link (this is very easy to do with FeedBurner), it doesn’t cost you a dime for either one of those.

OSTV 02: Enzian FILMSLAM

Every second Sunday of the month, John Theisen and Brian Feldman host a program of short films at the Enzian Theater in Maitland by Florida Filmmakers. Winners are picked by the audience to advance to the Brouhaha Grand Slam in December. Michelle joined us and got a chance to talk with the organizers at the event.

At the January FILMSLAM, 6 Florida films were featured:
Security Deposit - Erica Matyas
Since September - Christopher Zawadzki (3rd Place)
The Blue Moon Pull (PART I) - Young Kim
Aging Imaginations - Kirk Murray
A Man in the Attic - Ali Imran Zaidi (1st Place)
SPEAKEASY - E.R. Jess
Orlando Scene appears courtesy of Liberatr.net

The February and March FILMSLAM events were also a great time, we highly recommend going out and supporting local film to the tune of a $5 bill. If you want to find out more about people producing video and film locally, our other blog, Orlando Video, allows creatives in Orlando to send us links to their video on the web. We have featured E.R. Jess’ group, Feedbag Films, several times now.

Handmade Puppet Dreams Screenings This Week

Handmade Puppet Dreams is a shorts collection put together by Heather Henson of the annual Orlando Puppet Festival and many many other creative projects. Heather has funded some of the shorts she includes in the collection (namely Harker), whereas others are made by friends and acquaintances or picked up at other festivals as she takes the program on the road. There are some very entertaining pieces, also including the surreal Unicycle Baby Guy, and Project Huxley none of which should be missed.

This first screening is happening Monday in or around SXSW, but the second one is right here in Florida, even if it is down South. Delray Beach is, to my understanding, in between West Palm Beach and Boca Raton, about 3 hours from Orlando. If you have the time next weekend, check out the festival and Handmade Puppet Dreams (myspace).

Twa Toots on MySpace

The second record we played on The Zanzibar Lounge was by an insanely rare British Twee Pop band called Twa Toots. If you have heard of this band outside of our podcast, feel lucky. A google search for them turns up jack crap.

I’m not sure if he/she wants their identity revealed, but a friend of ours has created a Twa Toots MySpace page. You can get there and add them as a friend at:

myspace.com/twatootspop

There are 4 tracks up there you will have a hard time finding in all but the most pretentious filesharing networks, so revel in them and bask in the glory which is Twa Toots.

We have also mentioned several times that Marc and Nicole write for web zine - RetroLowFi - they do a column there called Criminally Overlooked, and Twa Toots got a feature. The post doesn’t have much info, but it helps to fill in the story a bit. Check it out.

Feedbag Films: The Making of Splice

The Making of Splice - Teaser

Add to My Profile | More Videos
This is the third feature for Feedbag Films here on Orlando Video. Why? They keep putting out new stuff, they blog about it, and I watch the videos, knowing they will be something worth my time. I haven’t been disappointed yet.

Tod Caviness, AKA Sam (Demencius Vex) Ripken left a comment on the blog post for this video containing the following text:

I just wanted to say that I am quite proud to have been a part of the movie that has taken our old paradigms about science fiction and ignited them into a searing ball of plasma

My impression of this short is that they will be showing us the Red vs. Blue, Venture Brothers, The Office, and/or Harvey Birdman side of live science fiction - way too serious and at the same time clumsy and down to earth. If I am wrong Butch, please let me know.

You can find out more about this group at the Feedbag Films webpage, which needs a raw injection of CSS/HTML pixie dust right now, or at myspace.com/feedbagfilms, where you can be fake friends with them and tell them you saw their work on OrlandoVideo.TV if you like. If you want your own videos here on the blog and Liberatr.net, send an email with a link to < liberatr AT gmail DOT com >. There is some editorial process that goes into this blog, so providing some extra info doesn’t hurt.

Genevieve Bernard as Orlando’s Associate Producer

Feb 28, 2007
The Orlando International Fringe Theatre Festival is thrilled to announce that we have hired Ms. Genevieve Bernard as our new Associate Producer.

Many of you might know Genevieve from her work as the Artistic Director/Choreographer of VOCI Dance which she has been a part of since 2000. VOCI and Genevieve have been part of The Fringe for the past 7 years.

Genevieve comes to us also from Orange County Public schools where she has worked as a dance and music teacher for the past 8 years and spent much time creating and implementing a dance curriculum for OCPS elementary school students.

We are looking forward to an exciting 2007 Fringe and having Genevieve on our team. Please help us in welcoming her when you she her at local arts events or around the festival itself May 17-28th!

45 Year Old Productions: The History of Pennsylvania

Do you ever have one of those moments, when you’re reading a friend’s blog post and you notice a reference to the name of a film company here in town? No? Well, it happened to me yesterday, and, being the author of Orlando Video, I looked into Deeb Studios.

I didn’t find much about Deeb except a webpage with some gorgeous videos. The last one on the list was a particularly well photographed trailer for a short film called The History of Pennsylvania, created by a local filmmaker named Ryan of 45 Year Old Productions (try myspace, the site is “under construction”). They have some videos linked there, as well as on Ryan’s YouTube page. There’s not too much information about Ryan, Deeb or 45 Year Old that I could find, but I’m sure that with a portfolio like this, we’ll be seeing more from them.

If you have something you’d like to see here on Orlando Video, your own or from someone you know, send an email with a link to liberatr [at] gmail DOT com.

Pandos: Are You A Dreamer?

Note: If you are having trouble viewing this video (especially on Windows), please email liberatr [at] gmail DOT com.

I have been aware of Jonathan (AKA Pandos) and his work since at least the 2006 Grandma Party. He walked up to us at our blanket and handed us some CDs with very pretty packaging and fun electronic music on them. For whatever reason, I lost those CDs in a box of stuff I didn’t open until I moved in October, when I found them and was pleased by the “B4RSK1LZ” and reminded of the kind guy who handed them to me. Two of the discs were actually blank according to my computer, but one was called “Orange” and came in orange packaging with hand-draw artwork, a linen front and some painted bits of what I think is upholstery samples.

I recently had the pleasure of watching a live Pandos performance at Austin’s Coffee. There is no way I can describe his work to you and have it make sense - even the video clip above does not do him justice.

Pandos is an exercise in found audio and video, or it at least seems that way. Jonathan appears to have compiled several hours of video of very interesting things in order to make a composite work. He takes three old television sets and three VCRs with about 20 VHS tapes and proceeds to play them in overlapping patterns that create an impossible to recreate live performance of sight and sound. Even the on-screen display for the VCRs, like “PLAY” and “STOP” and up contributing to the final composition.

The digital video and audio by Pandos clearly stems from the same place. Electronic, but still melodic, again using found clips (like a Mr. Spell, or the Spice Girls “Wannabe” for example). Jonathan referred to himself as a VJ, but he certainly has an ear for composition, as “Are you a dreamer?” demonstrates.

On a few of the posts here at Orlando Video, you will notice a “Download” link, namely from videos found on Revver or Blip - this comes from Jonathan’s suggestion that I make videos available for download as well as streaming. If you want your video featured here, as a link, a streaming video or a download, just email me - liberatr [at] gmail DOT com.
