This is either the most pretentious or the most unpretentious video ever. Aside from the music being good, I can’t think of a simpler idea or executing it better than this. lo-fi is sci fi (aka Chris Zabriske) has just launched the website for his band/solo project. His first record is called The Black Hole, after the Disney movie of the same name.

Do not underestimate Chris or this album. Go check him out on MySpace, download the album from his web page, watch for upcoming shows - seriously. If Chris had a street team, I would be Vice President. Chris has a lot of other video stuff to show off, as he’s worked on some music videos for the likes of John Vanderslice (really) and a number of short films. Chris does video related work for the Orlando Public Library, too. Chris is the type of guy we like to feature again and again here on Orlando Video, so get used to it now.

If you have a favorite Chris Zabriske video, one of your own, something from a friend - as long as I can relate it to Orlando, it’s golden. Just send some linkage to < liberatr AT gmail DOT com >.

MUMPSEANDGER – OR THREE BANDS IN A VAN

Well, it had to happen sooner or later.

Picture if you will: almost every music act in Orlando has members from other groups, or people that stand out in said groups end up forming solo acts and taking 2, 3, even 4 years to write, release and eventually perform their Grande Opus - the one solo album that will carry them out of the liner notes and into the local stratosphere. This is not to say anything against those who are in several bands, those who have solo projects, or even those who spent hour after painstaking hour perfecting each composition and recording. **(insert tangent here, see footnote)**

One such event has hit the Twilight Zone this year - I have just named it MUMPSEANDGER - like the Frankenstein monster, it doesn’t have a “The” or a last name, it is just known by its spooky moniker. I made a video about this three-headed monster for Orlando Scene TV a few weeks ago before I got so busy I couldn’t see. Really, the video exists to help Relay for Life, but if you learn about some cool local bands while you are clicking ads for cancer, I think we all win.

Here’s the short version: Jeff has Mumpsy, which has Matt; Matt has Dodger, which has Sean, Jeff, and Conrad; Sean has a solo project, which has Matt, Conrad and Jeff. If you also include various and sundry other people, apparently they can all fit in a 15-passenger van and tour the countryside like a big happy family. I think I might end up needing a chart when we’re through.

In the middle of May through early June, Dodger, Mumpsy and Sean Moore will be gracing stages with a special 75-minute set - I guess they will leave the keyboards, drums and equipment set up and do a little dance between pieces. I am honestly wondering if a new Swomee Swans or something like it will end up coming out of this, or if they’ll own up to it and admit that Post*Records is pretty much one big band with different frontmen. It’s also a boys club - where is the local fem-power record label? Step up to the gender-neutral plate, Orlando!

**(begin tangent, footnoted for clarity)**I myself am a perfectionist - but unlike the recording industry, my performance space is also my publishing space and my rehearsal space - so you get to watch all three take place at once - this blog started out like that - a couple of weak releases, followed by some misdirected musings. Now I have a good idea of what I can do here, but I don’t have the time or the resources. Really, I am hoping to find some people willing to write about local music - the stuff that starts here and the stuff that blows through town. if you end up taking recordings or video, all the better and much encouraged - I’ll even do some of the editing if you need me to.

Likemind Promo Video: Next Coffee Day Apr 20th

If you have been seeing bunches of posts about this Friday Morning Coffee thing down at Lake Eola, let me introduce you to Likemind… with video. This is not a video from our own Likemind.orl, but instead the original Likemind.us in NYC. Our event is a syndication of the New York event, which actually just makes the whole difference between Florida Creatives and this event all the more confusing. Loren and the folks over at 1938Media put this video together.

Likemind was started last year in New York, we have a “chapter” in Orlando. Florida Creatives was started by me at the end of last year, but with a different purpose. Likemind is about getting together and talking - about whatever, whereas we are specifically trying to rally the community. There is enough room for two groups on a website - plenty. Maybe one day we will have videos too. For a while I thought we would post audio from the event, but I have been too busy to mess with it lately.

The next event is scheduled for April 20th at Lake Eola Panera, but I’ll be in England then. Who wants to step up? Alex is co-organizer with me, but he can’t do it alone. It’s not a conversation without 2 people. This responsibility is only temporary, I’m coming back - don’t worry.

Here’s an interview with Noah and Piers, the guys who started Likemind. This video was all I needed to know we needed an Orlando group.

Mark on the Road NYC: 3-21-07

We’ve blogged about Mark Baratelli before here on Orlando Video. Here in town, Mark makes podcasts, sings, dances, acts, improvises, photoshops, social network manages, consults, models - you name it, Mark is there.

Mark has now set a new path for himself - Broadway! Bright lights, the Big Apple, Chinese food, 5th Avenue, the 24 hour Apple store and so much more. Every day Mark has been posting a video of his audition on his blog. Yesterday’s vlog was a great (and fun) example of Mark’s work, so I am sharing this one here. If you like what you see, go subscribe.

In each video, Mark attempts to give us a glimpse of his experience auditioning for shows - musicals, mostly. He gives an introduction, shows us the room outside the audition space, and then sets down his cell phone on the stage to record the performance (I think). In this video, Mark got a callback, so I would consider that success. In sales, if you make 20 calls and 4 callbacks, you’re having a good sales day. Let’s hope Mark can grab a better ratio than that in NYC.

From Mark’s Blog:

“The Producers” National Tour Audition I got a friggin callback for Carmen Ghia! The callback consisted of a one-take reading from the script. That link is the EXACT scene I read! They didn’t give me any notes or direction. I don’t care. i am just grateful they gave me the chance to be seen. ….. I felt good about my song. I remembered from yesterday to take a bigger breath before that last note and it worked. The piano stopped playing while I sang that note. Made me chuckle inside. But he caught me at the end.

FL Creatives 06: Sticks of Fire

From the Tampa Blogger Meetup on February 27th at Hawk's Neighborhood Grill in South Tampa, Ryan Price interviews Jim Johnson, Tommy "Beer" Duncan, Tim Burke, Lisa Ciurro, Matt Ragis and Joel Ramos from the Sticks of Fire blog.

Sticks of Fire is a blog about Tampa and the Bay Area by Tampa residents. I had the pleasure of getting to talk to most of the Sticks team about what they do on and off the web, and also about Florida Creatives. This is a dynamic group that should be paid attention to, and I hope to be able to come back to everyone I met at the Tampa Blogger Dinner and find out what they're doing soon.

Florida Creatives Happy Hour Report

Another great turn out, only this time we are seeing more familiar faces. This means that some of the people that have joined us in our events have found value in them. Perhaps it is the casual atmosphere and opportunity for candid conversation, or maybe it is about meeting the right people to help you with a project. Whatever your motivation, we are happy to have you. My personal experiences from these events have been very positive. I have found that those whom I have had conversations with have not only been considerate to listen to what i had to say, but in most cases I have found that each party has had legitimate interest in each side of the conversation no matter what the topic. It is purely people enjoying people and the comfort in knowing there is a place to go to share resources and experiences with others of like mind. Thanks again to Ryan Price for forging ahead with the original concept. Ryan you can count on me, your partner, to support the growth and expansion of this great idea.

OSTV Still Getting Started

As our show is so new, we are still getting some of the kinks in the system worked out. Ryan and Julie put a lot of work into the first two episodes of OSTV, and the goal is to have a new show out every Monday. However, things don’t always go as planned. Expect to see the next episode in the middle of this week as we get ourselves up to speed.

We have some exciting stuff planned for release, like a piece about a new art gallery, an interview with the immortal Michael Winslow, a look at a local creative networking group, a profile about a local improv comedy night, even a long-running swing dance night in a most unlikely location. We are constantly looking for new events, groups and locations to promote, so we welcome your suggestions. Please send any information to < liberatr AT gmail DOT com >.

One of our hosts, John, is currently off on a 3-month tour of the Americas, which means he is currently in Colorado heading West. We will be checking in with John and his wife Kamrin soon, but if you can’t wait, check out FindingAmerica.TV for lots of video, live updates and their travel route on an interactive map.

Another contributor to the show, Mark, is currently in NYC auditioning for next season’s show-stopping productions. We might be hearing from Mark about some New York goings-on in addition to the regular Orlando fare, check back here for more developments in the future.

Of course, we can’t mention John and Mark without giving some love to Michelle and Becky. Michelle you know from the Film Slam episode, and we are taping Becky’s first episode this weekend. They are sharing their interests and favorite local spots with the production staff and planning new episodes, perhaps even as you read this.

Ryan, the producer, is hard at work editing and alternately scouting new locations and making connections all over town. He organizes a monthly Happy Hour called Florida Creatives that would be of particular interest to anyone watching this show. The event happens each third Monday of the month - check the website for details.

Ze Frank on Creativity – Bittersweet

If you’ve never watched The Show with Ze Frank, I’m sorry to say that Ze has finished his one-year run of The Show. Ze has put out some fantastic observations over the last year. This video, recorded in Austin at South By Southwest (SXSW), is about Creativity.

Florida Creatives is full of people who have the confidence to learn something new and advance from 0 to 1. Hopefully by creating a community we can inspire others to do the same, and lend support and encouragement to our peers when they need it.

Thanks for a great run, Ze.

FindingAmerica.TV: Fairhope Street Artists

We have featured John Rife on OrlandoVideo.TV before for his Finding John video about the Winter Park Farmer’s Market. Now instead of Finding John, we’re finding John and Kamrin as they take a whistlestop tour of the country, meeting interesting people, seeing the sights and experiencing local color all over the place with Finding America.

From FindingAmerica.TV, Fairhope, AL - March 9th, 2007:

Kamrin and I had the good fortune of meeting Bill Harrison and his crew on the street corner in front of the Latte Da coffee and book shop. With a live band in residence each Saturday the Street Artists of Fairhope do their thing - and they do it well, might I add. Check out my interview with Bill, Jean-Marie McDonnell and Georgie “Gigi” Hackford.

The best part about this site is by far the “Follow Us” map - go there and see the latest stops and get a geographical look at where John and Kamrin are, where they’ve been and watch the videos right there on the map. John also has a webcam set up that he turns on during downtime, and a Twitter account to let you get the updates in real time. You can also put a pushpin in the “Lead Us” map, and they might pay you a visit!

If you think a video about Alabama doesn’t fit the Orlando Video theme, I’d have to disagree with you. Here is a Florida boy and his wife cutting a path across the country and sharing it with all of us - this is a wonderful reason for us to blog. If you want me to share more of John’s videos, videos you made, or something you found online that relates to Orlando, email a link to < liberatr AT gmail DOT com >.

Do you love the Fringe? Do something about it!

The Breakdown:

Orlando Fringe has over 80 shows this year. Last year I viewed and reviewed about 17 of them, and a couple of freebie email interviews. Hence, there is no possible way for one person to see all the shows. I’m not even going to try. My goal for this year is 25 shows, which also means it will cost me (up to) $275 for the week, not counting food and gas I am considering billeting, but I have roommates and I don’t want to inconvenience them.

What I Am Looking For:

  1. People who want to gather information about shows
This means looking up company websites/myspace pages, writing or collecting summaries and blurbs posting photos to Zooomr/Slide/Photobucket, perhaps adding some of this stuff to the Wiki (yes, we are going to have a wiki) and encouraging shows to do so themselves.
  2. People who want to conduct email/phone/video interviews
I think this is self-explanatory. If I can get even one person to assist with #1, then #2 will be easier. Most people might think #1 and #2 go hand in hand, but there are a lot of people I know who feel their opinions are not important and would not be interested in the interview bit.
  3. People who want to watch and review shows
One large part of this job is finding out who wants to trade Complimentary Tickets for reviews, the second part is watching the show, talking to people who have seen it, hopefully taking some photos/video if you have the equipment, and last but not least putting together 250-1000 words about what went on at the show and what you liked.
  4. Shows willing to trade 1 or 2 comps for a feature on the site
A few Fringe Bucks wouldn’t hurt either! ;-) Since we have over 80 shows to choose from, those shows willing to cooperate with “The Media” will be gladly repaid with our services. A nice writeup, a link to your website/myspace, some photos/video/audio, a review of your show, whatever. Seeing shows tends to add up quickly, and I’d like to be able to cover all the shows as early in the week as possible or even during tech rehearsal so we have everybody covered before the newspapers with their slow traditional printing processes.

Please note that anyone is welcome to respond to this posting: You can be a volunteer, an actor/show producer, a staff member, an anonymous party (you don’t even have to tell me who you are) or anyone really. You can post the reviews to your own blog or myspace either before or after they go up on Blogging Fringe, you own your words. We own your words too, and we put up ads on the blog and in some of the videos, but we really don’t make any money from them. If Blogging Fringe does better than breaking even, I will gladly throw everyone who helped out a pizza party at Chuck-E-Cheese, and then I will proceed to fall at a dead faint because I made more money than I spent. What I’m saying is, good luck getting that pizza party.

Please direct all questions to the comments on this blog, the contact form on BloggingFringe.com, or < info AT bloggingfringe DOT com >. Thanks for reading, comping tickets, or even for suggestions. I really appreciate it, and the performers, producers and Fringe patrons will appreciate it too.
