Mark Baratelli: Improv Cabaret at Puppets From the Edge

Mark Baratelli is no stranger to blogging or podcasting. He is also a talented performer, with disciplines in improv, comedy, music and I believe dance and photography on top of being a marketing whiz. You may have seen him on billboards and ads all around Orlando, performing at the SAK Comedy Lab, starring in his one-man show, Improv Cabaret at the Orlando Fringe Festival, the Footlight Theatre, and most recently the Orlando Puppet Festival.

This video is from a show at OPF titled “Puppets From the Edge”. The show is arranged by the fabulous Marsian of PuppetSlam.com and Heather Henson. Mark is joined as always by his accompanist Jim Rhinehart, and a special puppet guest “Turds” the turtle, performed by James Donmoyer of Am-Jam Productions here in Orlando.

This is my first experiment posting MySpace video anywhere, I hope it works. If not, you will have just seen a big link at the top of the post instead of a flash player. I am trying to work with Mark to get him to put it on YouTube for me.

You can see more samples of Improv Cabaret at the show’s YouTube page. Send us videos liberatr [at] gmail dot com.

The Heathens: Stickin’ Around Music Video

If you pay attention to independent music in Orlando, there’s a good chance you’ve heard of alt-country favorite The Heathens (Post*Records). They’ve gained quite a following around town, and, like almost every other Orlando band, all of the members are in other bands, have their own solo acts, duets, etc. This video was directed by Benjamin M Piety, who is a member of Fantacine (I believe that’s “Fantah-sinnuh”), whatever that means… the same group also also produced of the excellent short Mr. Malakai Battles the Aeroplane (30 second clip, Drew Blatman, 2006), which I had the pleasure of viewing at the Orlando Film Festival this year. Apparently, I even gave some technical help to someone producing graphics for the film, namely the plane. Nothing to brag about, but fun to be connected even in a small way.

Fantacine’s work has also been featured on Orlando cable access Vision TV’s Cinema Cafe. If you have a DVR and Bright House at home, you should be recording this program. Why? Because you’re reading this blog, silly!

Now that I have done my first video post, I can check and see if Democracy Player will gracefully handle a feed with YouTube videos in it, and how smart Vox is in this situation as well. Here goes nothing!

Speaking of first video post, the best way for more video posts to show up here is by your participation. Send me video files or links and I’ll post them here. liberatr [at] gmail dot com

More Ways to Share: Tagging

If you are too lazy to email (liberatr [at] gmail dot com), but you use a service that supports tagging (Vox, LiveJournal, YouTube, Flickr, del.icio.us, WordPress, Technorati, Blogger, etc.) you can simply tag your posts “orlandovideo” and I will hopefully be able to find them that way. I am going to set up a subscription to these tags in any services I use and monitor them regularly to see what’s coming in. The neat thing about this tag: we might get some happy accidents in the way of typos that lead us to Orlando Videos anyway.

It won’t take but an extra 2 seconds to click down to the “tags”, “labels” or “categories” area of your favorite application and type orlandovideo, all one word, no underscores or spaces. Do it, you’ll be happy you did.

Send Me Your Videos and Links!

I created this blog to showcase great web video content from around Orlando and Florida in general. There is so much video on the web now, but what is local to us? How can we meet the people singing in to their hairbrush, or microphone, and why can’t we start a discussion with someone local instead of in San Fransisco or New York? There is nothing wrong with NYC and SF, but they aren’t my hometown.

Consider this an open invitation for submissions of any kind of video posted anywhere on the web that were created in, about, or in conjunction with Orlando and surrounding climes. I want to show this city what it’s made of, and the best way to do that is for people to share with one another.

You can send files and links to liberatr [at] gmail dot com along with any information you have about who created it and why, how to get in touch with the creator (or yourself), and any other fun facts you think people might want to hear.

If it is not already in Flash video format (if you don’t know what this is, don’t worry) I will do my damnedest to make it so and easily viewable for all the kids on the interweb. In addition to this site the video will also get re-posted to Liberatr.net, and, if I can get it in a portable-player-friendly format, iTunes Podcast directory as well. If you would like any copyright messages to be displayed along with your video, please try to include them in the body of the video, but also send me any text you would like posted along side your piece.

You are free to set your own terms, as well. Example:

  • I would like you to link to my video, but not post it in a player on your blog or other sites.
  • I would like you to make my video available in a player, but not for download.
  • Or my own special conditions. This is really about sharing your video with your neighbors.

The Orlando Weekly and the Sentinel don’t provide these services. Hell, even everyone’s favorite basement radio, WPRK, and the best TV station in town, Vision TV, aren’t really doing exactly what I am. You send a video or link, it gets posted. Period. The product is just what we make it. Done deal.

One more quick post

I Heart OPF I am very pleased to see more and more people coming to the Puppet Festival every night. That either means that the word has gotten out, or people are bringing their friends. I hope both are equally true.

I won’t be around at all Saturday, as I signed up to do the UCF Marching Knight Alumni Band tomorrow for my last opportunity to perform in the Citrus Bowl. I will certainly be around quite as much as I can on Sunday. I am hoping to get a little time to talk to the folks from Dramaton about their puppets and their show, and anyone else who will be around.

If you miss me, there’s always MySpace to help us keep in touch, or more traditionally email or phone. If you’re reading this blog, chances are you have a Ryan Price business card somewhere. The number still works, it’s been the same since Summer 2005.

I hope all my new friends keep in touch. I would love to hear what you’re doing with yourselves after the festival, and get some real interviews out of Puppet Festival too. The whole thing is so compact, it’s tough to catch people when they will have some good quality downtime. Fringe was better for that sort of thing, and film festivals haven’t been too bad either.

My Traditional Ethnic Wedding

Show: Songs of Mirth and Mayhem
Company: Paul Mesner Puppets
Venue: Mad Cow Theatre (corner of Pine St. and Magnolia Ave.)
Show times: Thu Nov 2, 10:15 PM;
Tickets: $15
Call: 407-297-8788 - info and tickets

When I spoke with Paul Mesner tonight, he told me that Songs of Mirth and Mayhem is a much younger program than Wiley and the Hairy Man (a few months compared to a few decades). Still, my 24-year-old self found this show to be even better than Hairy Man. In no way is this show intended for young people, covering several adult subjects including drugs, sex, and violence!

The show is primarily a cabaret, following the story of a young girl with a strange industrial accident in her past. Connie Miranda tells us some of her earliest memories, and a few from growing up, right up until the previous night. There is a love triangle, a pot-smoking granny, and a bit of crime and… punishment! It’s too juicy to give away, but needless to say, this show is a laugh riot. Paul Mesner produced two winners in the same weekend. Way to go.

Photos and Video

What do event bloggers do with our photos and video? Do we make pretty slideshows? Add fancy graphics? Do any editing at all? Not when it’s almost 1:30 and we have 3 more posts to write!

Check out my Flickr photoset.

Also, I took a quick video with Uncle Nappy showing off his shadow puppets after his show tonight.

This video is also available for direct download, but that’s mostly for the iTunes and RSS subscribers to enjoy.

Holy Night

Show: The Traveler
Company: Dramaton Theater
Venue: Mad Cow Theatre (corner of Pine St. and Magnolia Ave.)
Show times: Thu Nov 2, 9:15 PM; Fri Nov 3, 7:45 PM;
Tickets: $15
Call: 407-297-8788 - info and tickets

I didn’t know what to expect from The Traveler going in to the show. What I found was something very special. New York’s Dramaton Theater made themselves famous doing non-verbal theatre, but the Traveler is more straightforward. The play is a collection three short stories about people on literal different walks of life. The first two stories are adapted from previous works, namely Richard Midleton’s On the Brighton Road (1911) and William Yeats’ Purgatory (1922). The third story was written for Dramaton by Enma Ito of Fantoma Theater Company of Osaka, Japan. The stories really go together to make up a whole in this piece: hats off, kids.

Possibly the most notable part of the show are the puppets. Minimalism only begins to describe the design. The stage is drenched in fog for almost the entire show, with the performers almost representing the shadows of their puppets against the mist. Even when the minimal design of the puppet would have gotten in the way of the storytelling, they dealt with it handily by having a second performer enter and perform the action. I was very impressed with the technique and the seamless way all the pieces fit together technically. I was geeking out as much as I was enjoying the story.

From what I have seen, I would recommed Dramaton to anyone who likes theater or puppetry. This is a wonderfull marriage of the two.

Wow – Mark’s Weekend

Once again I have no time to post, as Jack and the Beanstalk starts in 15 minutes. I might not make it!! Very quickly I wanted to point to a video by Blogging Fringe’s friend Mark Baratelli. He made a video about himself of all subjects, and he mentions that he will be performing in Sunday night’s show. Check it out:

Two Reviews in the Queue

After seeing The Traveler and Songs of Mirth and Mayhem today, I went to Club Pita with a friend, and we hung out a bit late. I need to get some sleep now, but I will post the reviews tomorrow afternoon, promise.

If you read Elizabeth Maupin’s blog today, you’ll see that she was having some trouble with her blog software. I suppose that is one reason for neglecting a post about Orlando Puppet Festival until 28 hours after it opened. I posted as soon as I got home from the first show, and at least I mentioned it in my post on Sunday. I don’t want to get braggy, but I do want to point out a lack of support for this event from the traditional media in town. There are plenty of puppet festivals around, but only one Orlando Puppet Festival. The Fringe gets insane amounts of coverage, and this event (and other events like the Orlando Film Festival should get similar fanfare. If the media are not willing to support Orlando Art, than who but the bloggers and blog readers can get the word out?

Also: Mayor Buddy was in attendance at the Orlando Film Fest, but what about this event? Does he know it’s happening? Does he have the time to attend the cocktail reception on Saturday? Also on the point of the traditional media: if the Mayor of Orlando attends an event, it sounds pretty newsworthy to me. Explain that one.
